Joe and Pennie Vasta moved from Cortlandt Manor, NY to Overland Park, KS in 2005. The Vasta's oldest daughter, Madison, was in middle school at the time and the Vasta’s wanted for their daughter to have the opportunity to play high school lacrosse. Realizing there could not be a lacrosse team if no one knew anything about the sport or how to play the game. So the Vasta’s began holding lacrosse clinics in the green space of their neighborhood to develop interest over two years.
That's when Dan and Dawn Britton, who moved to Overland Park, Kansas from Virginia, connected with the Vasta's. The Britton's had two daughter's, Kallie and Abby, who at the time were in middle and elementary school. The Britton’s had been looking for lacrosse opportunities in the area since they moved to Kansas 2002. Upon hearing a dad was holding lacrosse clinics in a nearby neighborhood, the Britton’s showed up to participate and help out.
The desire of Joe and Dan’s was to establish some middle school 7th/8th grade girls youth teams so they could begin teaching girls the game to establish a high school team. However, they needed to find enough girls who would be interested. The Vasta’s and Britton’s began teaching lacrosse 101 skills as part of the P.E. classes for the nearby Blue Valley School District Middle Schools.
After a year of lacrosse clinics, P.E. classes and promoting lacrosse in the Blue Valley area, the Blue Valley Girls Lacrosse Club was established in the spring of 2007. There were enough girls to form four teams and they played against each other. After two years of developing the girls youth teams, the Vasta’s and Britton’s, established in the spring of 2009, the Blue Valley Titans high school lacrosse program. Joe and Dan were the first coaches for the high school program and continued to coach the next 4-6 years.
The youth program has grown with teams starting as young as 3rd through 8th grade and the high school program has a junior varsity and varsity program. Since the establishment of the club in 2007, the Blue Valley Girls Lacrosse Club has had over 1,000+ girls youth to high school involved.
Beginning the fall of 2020, Joe and Pennie Vasta stepped away from the club after many years and moved the youth girls program under the leadership of Brandon Horschig who now oversees both boys and girls youth programs for the Blue Valley area. The youth program is located at www.bluevalleylax.com.
